Don't Miss:

Snorkeling across the channel in the little bays and around the southeast point of Little Camanoe Island. We've never seen anyone else there, coral and fish variety is fantastic, and the sea fans in the bay on the north side of the little peninsula alone are worth the trip, as long as the sea state is mellow enough for the dinghy transit. If snorkeling around the point or into the channel between Little and Great Camanoe Islands, beware of the current. It can all but overwhelm even strong swimmers at times.

Setting point, Anegada:

It sits serene and apart, yet it is located only about 20 miles to the northeast of Tortola and 14 miles north of Virgin Gorda – an easy and pleasant sail for those on a Tortola Yacht Charter. The sparsely populated island is ringed by a swathe of white sand, and is almost completely surrounded by the Horseshoe Reef. This reef is one of the world’s largest and is responsible for over 300 shipwrecks. Aptly named by Columbus, Anegada (the “drowned land”) is only 28 feet about sea level at its highest point.

This place has a lot to do, so get started early if you only have one day. Not to be missed are the North Shore beaches, Loblolly being the most popular for snorkelers and those looking to kick back at The Big Bamboo. There are miles of beaches to explore, and any of the shuttle/taxi drivers will be happy to give you advice on which beach might best suit your desires. Dinghy in and go to any dock, the most obvious being the public dock at Potter’s. Lots of taxis here, or you can head to the Anegada Reef Hotel to the West and take their beach shuttle for $8 round trip (runs from 8am every day).

Also, if you are using Garmin BlueChart version 6 or later, the charts include Don Street's Imray chart series. The charting of the Anegada area on some of these charts is incorrect by a substantial amount. Specifically, Russian chart Ru21085 and Imray charts Im1(a), Ima, Ima1(A), Ima2(A), and Ima23(A) are incorrect. All of these charts have the geographic features in the Anegada area approximately 1 mile to the northeast of their correct positions. When your GPS is zoomed to certain ranges, these charts may be selected for the display. If so, be aware that depth and geographic features relative to your position and waypoints will be shown incorrectly!

Anegada turtles: Ocean-side Anegada has the most important BVI nesting beaches for green sea turtle(see swimming turtle). Anegada's west end beaches and related sea grass communities from Pomato Point to Cow Wreck Bay are important as well to thehawksbill turtle. Keep a lookout for turtles along the beaches on the eastern edge of Pomato Point, on West End Point, in Bones Bight, and in Loblolly Bay.

"Can I get bareboat certified during my charter?

Yes! The best destination for bareboat certification while on charter is the Virgin Islands both because the area is favorable for learning to sail and because there are many yacht options.  With a little pre-studying bareboat certification can be accomplished during a 7 night charter.  The certification is ASA and includes 3 consecutive courses: 101, 103 and 104. In order to stay within the ASA regulations, you would need to charter a monohull.  Or, you can complete the first course in 2 days at a local Tortola sailing school which is not a live aboard.  Then you can continue on a catamaran for the other two courses.

You can charter any bareboat that has a cabin/berth for the ASA captain.  The ASA captain's fee is $200/day, plus meals and gratuity.  The course materials and exams cost approximately $100/person.

The most ideal situation is to charter for 10 nights, allowing 7 nights to accomplish your bareboat certification and an additional 3 nights on your own."

If you are having a captain and/or cook, it is customary to tip them at the end of your charter.  For a first day check out Captain, $30-$50 is usual and for crew staying on board for the entire vacation, $500 - $800 / week is suggested. This is at your discretion of course!"

Provisioning

With a large resident and visiting charter fleet in the BVI, plus many cruisers and bareboaters, access to fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen foods and beverages has become a very important industry. Many specialize in provisioning yachts.

An increasing number of businesses on Tortola have expanded outside the Road Town area. Get your supplies at Cane Garden Bay, West End, East End and Trellis Bay on Beef Island and North Sound, Virgin Gorda.

All supermarkets carry a range of spirits and wines.

You can obtain a list of produce and prices from supermarkets and wine merchants and orders can be placed by fax, email or telephone. Most of these companies will deliver direct to your yacht.

Moorings

Moorings are for day use only, with a 90 minute time limit. Overnight use not permitted. Fees are under review and subject to change.

Many of the sites where NPT mooring buoys are found, are areas exposed to rough ground seas, exposed rocks and reefs, so caution must always be used and overnight use is not permitted.

Please use a dock line through the pick up line thimble, and be sure not to drive over the mooring when leaving. Boats damaging moorings will be charged with replacement costs.

Please note that use of these moorings is at the userís risk and all users must have a valid permit. Permits can be obtained from the National Parks Trust, 57 Main Street, Road Town, Tortola (Tel: 494-3904 / 2069), charter companies, dive operators, clearing houses and Customs at all marine ports of entry. All fees received from purchased permits are used towards installation, repair and maintenance of the moorings. Please help the BVI National Parks Trust to preserve paradise.

Marine Park Regulations

The Wreck of the RMS Rhone Marine Park extends west from Salt Island to include the island of Dead Chest. The RMS Rhone anchor lies at the entrance to Great Harbour, Peter Island and is also part of the Marine Park. Anchoring is strictly prohibited within the Marine Park, vessels must use the mooring buoys provided and obtain a NPT mooring permit. Vessels over 80ft must anchor in Salt Island Bay and use the dinghy dock lines provided within the Marine Park. Fishing and the removal of artifacts/ marine life is strictly prohibited. All vessels must not exceed the posted speed limit of 5mph in this no-wake zone. Please contact the National Parks Trust (Tel: 494-3904 / 2069) for further information.

Dress Code

The British Virgin Islanders tend to dress more formally than other Caribbean islands, so please cover up the beachwear when not at the beach.
